Dr. Spiller: "When I was in my late 20's, I sustained a severe lower back injury clam digging. To make a long story short, I ended up at St. Luke's Hospital in Bellingham where I was enrolled at Western Washington University. Hospitalized for 8 days, accomplishing P.T. every day without improvement, the doctors suggested they perform 'exploratory back surgery' to discern what was wrong. That was before MRI's or CT Scans came on the scene. From an x-ray standpoint, the medical doctor told me there was nothing wrong with my back, i.e., there were no fractures, tumors, congenital defects, etc. Anyway, the medical doctor wouldn't refer me to a chiropractor (I don't believe in those quacks") for help (my student health insurance plan wouldn't pay for chiropractic care without his referral), but was willing to perform back surgery on me! Needless to say, I thought it prudent to forgo the surgery and give chiropractic a try."
"After a few days at home from the hospital with no change in my painful condition, I called a chiropractor a friend recommended. He accomplished a thorough case history, performed an exacting exam, took some x-rays of my lower back and. showed to me that I had improper rotation of the vertebra in my lower back and pelvis that likely predisposed me to the disc injury I had sustained. He proceeded to adjust my back. With that first visit/adjustment, I knew I was in the right place! My back pain didn't go away immediately, but the first adjustment relieved the pain a lot. I was able to sleep better that night for a lot of reasons."
"A few weeks passed before I was 100%, but it was a life changing event for me. I finished my Bachelor of Science degree from Western and eventually moved back to Davenport, Iowa, to begin Chiropractic College. I graduated in 1981 and have been working on the Eastside since 1982."
"I am a Vietnam Veteran. I was a helicopter pilot assigned to the 1st Infantry Division. After graduating from flight school, I was reassigned to the University of Southern California to attend a Flight Safety Course. It was the same program that the early astronauts attended. I felt very honored to have been selected to attend the program. While in Vietnam, I investigated 13 major 'accidents' and several hostile fire 'incidents'. I was reassigned to Germany for 2 years (3rd Infantry Division) before receiving a European discharge whereupon I traveled in Europe and the Middle East for 6 months before returning home."
"I've often been asked why I became a chiropractor. It's a fair question. Briefly, having witnessed/participated in man's inhumanity to man, I decided I wanted to be on the other end of the spectrum. Because of my personal positive response to chiropractic care I decided to return to school and become a chiropractor."
